CLOVIS, CA, October 28, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Abhi Thakkar has been recognized for his professional achievements and contributions to dentistry and healthcare leadership, including his work in community health, clinical quality improvement, public health, dental education, workforce development and organized dentistry.

Dr. Abhi Thakkar - A Dental Director, educator and public health advocate has advanced access to care through community dentistry, health literacy, workforce development, healthcare innovation and organized dentistry.

Dr. Thakkar's career has evolved from direct clinical practice into increasingly broad responsibilities in healthcare leadership, education, public health and professional service. Since June 2022, he has served as Dental Clinical Director at Camarena Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center serving rural and underserved communities in California's Central Valley. In this role, he provides clinical leadership across a multi-site dental program while continuing to practice as a general dentist.

Remaining clinically active has been an important part of Dr. Thakkar's approach to leadership. On his clinical days, he provides comprehensive general dental care to patients of different ages and supports colleagues with complex treatment needs. Maintaining direct contact with patients and frontline clinical teams, he says, helps ensure that decisions made at the organizational level remain connected to the realities of care delivery.

Dr. Thakkar has also helped advance new approaches to care within the community health setting. His work has included development of clinical governance protocols, oral health literacy and teach-back initiatives, medical-dental integration strategies, teledentistry workflows and implementation frameworks supporting emerging digital dentistry technologies. These efforts reflect a broader interest in translating clinical innovation into practical systems that can improve consistency, communication, patient experience and access to care.

Beyond the dental department, Dr. Thakkar serves as Chair of Camarena Health's Service Excellence Council, where he helps lead organization-wide initiatives focused on patient experience, communication, service delivery and leadership alignment across medical, dental, behavioral health, specialty care and community programs.

Dr. Thakkar joined Camarena Health in July 2020 as a general dentist during the COVID-19 pandemic, when access to routine dental services had been significantly disrupted. Working with patients who had delayed care, lost coverage or presented with advanced dental needs strengthened his interest in community health and the systemic barriers that influence when and how patients obtain care. What began as an opportunity to provide care during an uncertain period ultimately developed into a long-term commitment to safety-net dentistry and healthcare leadership.

Education and mentorship have become another central part of his career. Dr. Thakkar serves as adjunct clinical faculty at Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine, where he provides clinical instruction, case review, competency assessment and mentorship to dental students completing community-based training. His contributions to clinical education have been recognized through the College of Dental Medicine Preceptor Champion Award from Western University of Health Sciences and an Outstanding Dental Preceptor Award from Camarena Health.

He also chairs the Fresno City College Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Advisory Committee, contributing to workforce development, educational program planning and alignment between academic training and the evolving needs of dental practices and community health systems.

Dr. Thakkar has additionally been invited to contribute to dental education beyond his formal faculty appointment. He has served as an invited lecturer and speaker at academic and professional programs, including presentations at the UCLA School of Dentistry on public health dentistry, Central Valley Health Network, California Dental Association, American College of Dentists, organized dentistry, leadership and quality improvement. He has also spoken at CDA Presents, public health programs, workforce-development conferences and professional education forums, addressing topics ranging from oral health literacy and teach-back communication to leadership, career development and community dentistry.

His work in oral health literacy has become an important intersection of his clinical, educational and public-health interests. As an Oral Health Literacy Dental Champion representing California's Central Valley, Dr. Thakkar has worked to advance patient-centered communication strategies, including teach-back approaches designed to move beyond simply providing information and instead confirm that patients understand diagnoses, treatment recommendations and preventive guidance. His work has included provider education and collaboration with academic and public-health partners on oral health literacy initiatives.

His broader public-health involvement includes participation in oral health advisory efforts in Madera, Fresno and Merced counties. Through these roles, he has contributed clinical and systems-level perspectives related to access to care, prevention, workforce needs, oral health education and community health planning. He has also participated in initiatives connecting oral health with nutrition, school health and broader population-health priorities.

Organized dentistry has been another major area of Dr. Thakkar's professional service. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the California Dental Association Membership Committee and as a member of CDA's Future of Dentistry Committee, contributing to discussions involving member engagement, workforce development, technology, access to care and sustainable models of dental practice. He has also been selected to serve on the California Dental Association Board of Directors beginning in 2027, extending his involvement into statewide governance and strategic oversight.

At the national level, Dr. Thakkar has been selected to serve on the American Dental Association's New Dentist Committee representing California, contributing to national discussions involving early-career dentists, mentorship, professional development, workforce issues and the future of the profession. He has also served as a delegate to the ADA House of Delegates, participating in policy and governance discussions affecting dentistry nationally.

Locally, Dr. Thakkar serves as Secretary of the Fresno Madera Dental Society and has served on its Board of Directors and Continuing Education Committee. His organized dentistry involvement has expanded from local participation to state and national roles, reflecting his interest in strengthening professional engagement while addressing issues that affect both clinicians and patients.

His professional activities also include research, scholarly writing and expert evaluation. Dr. Thakkar also serves as a peer reviewer for dental journals, evaluating scholarly work for scientific quality, methodology and relevance to the profession.

His invited judging and evaluation activities have included service as a judge for the Conrad Challenge as well as evaluation of dental hygiene student presentations and table-clinic projects. These roles complement his broader involvement in academic mentorship, clinical education and professional evaluation.

Dr. Thakkar is also involved in research and scientific writing focused on oral health, public health and healthcare integration. His scholarly work has addressed areas including maternal oral health, oral-systemic health, artificial intelligence and teach-back communication, oral and oropharyngeal disease, and integration of oral health into primary care and public-health systems. His research background also includes a UCLA-supported clinical research project that received funding and was presented at the International Association for Dental Research.
Dr. Thakkar completed postgraduate advanced clinical training in esthetics and restorative dentistry at the UCLA School of Dentistry, where he graduated with distinction and also contributed to student education as a teaching assistant. He previously earned his Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Dental Sciences & Hospital in Dharwad, Karnataka, India.

His continued professional development has included selection as a UCSF Champion Provider Fellow, where his work has focused on prevention, community partnerships and policy, systems and environmental approaches to health. As a 2026 Federal Service Immersion Fellow with AIDPH, Dr. Thakkar gained firsthand exposure to federal health agencies, public health policy, and efforts to strengthen the integration of oral health within the broader healthcare system.

Professional recognition for Dr. Thakkar's work has included selection to Incisal Edge's 2026 40 Under 40 list of emerging dental leaders and recognition by USA Dental Report among its inaugural 100 key opinion leaders shaping dentistry in 2026. He has also received recognition through the Forttuna Global Excellence Awards, including selection as Dentist of the Year, with formal recognition scheduled for December 2026. His Forttuna recognition was also highlighted through a Times Square display.

Dr. Thakkar has been elected to Fellowship in the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, International Academy of Dental Facial Aesthetics and Pierre Fauchard Academy, honorary organizations recognizing professional achievement, leadership, ethics and service within dentistry.

His leadership within these professional organizations has continued beyond fellowship recognition. In 2026, he was appointed Chair of the Southern California Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a Board Member-at-Large of the Northern California Section of the American College of Dentists, reflecting continued involvement in professional leadership, mentorship and service.

Dr. Thakkar credits much of his professional development to consistency, a willingness to accept responsibilities outside his immediate clinical role, continued learning and the support of mentors and colleagues throughout his career. His experience in community health has reinforced his belief that leadership should ultimately translate into meaningful improvements for patients, clinical teams and the systems responsible for delivering care.

"Community health has shaped the way I think about dentistry," Dr. Thakkar said. "Clinical care keeps me connected to the needs of individual patients, while leadership gives me the opportunity to improve the systems around that care. Ultimately, I hope to help patients receive better care, help the people delivering that care feel better supported and better prepared, and help build systems that are stronger and better able to serve the communities that depend on them."

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Thakkar enjoys hiking, traveling, reading about leadership and personal development, and spending time with family and friends. Hiking, in particular, provides an opportunity to step away from the demands of clinical and leadership responsibilities and return with a renewed perspective.

Looking ahead, Dr. Thakkar intends to continue developing at the intersection of clinical care, healthcare leadership, education, public health, research and organized dentistry. His goals include expanding access to high-quality oral healthcare, strengthening the integration of oral health with overall health, advancing oral health literacy and prevention, supporting sustainable workforce development and mentoring future dental professionals.

As his work continues to grow across clinical care, education, public health and professional leadership, Dr. Thakkar remains grounded in the people who first gave that work meaning: the patients who place their trust in him, the students and young professionals he has the opportunity to mentor, and the teams who serve their communities every day. Looking ahead, he hopes his contribution will be measured not simply by the roles he has held or the recognition he has received, but by the people he has helped, the opportunities he has created for others, and the systems that continue to serve patients long after his own involvement. For Dr. Thakkar, the most meaningful legacy would be knowing that his work helped make care more accessible, strengthened the people around him, and left the profession and the communities he serves a little better than he found them.
