NEW YORK, NY, November 2, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alan A. Kessler, MD, has been recognized for achievement in healthcare.

Dr. Kessler's distinguished career in obstetrics and gynecology is marked by more than three decades of leadership, expertise and a longstanding reputation for quality care. Since 1995, he has served as the chair of quality assurance for the obstetrics and gynecology department at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, where he oversees hospital QA activities in Obstetrics and Gynecology at both Weill Cornell and NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, leads QA committees and helps develop hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.

Providing personalized obstetric and gynecological care, Dr. Kessler manages labor and delivery schedules to accommodate the needs of his patients and performs office-based gynecological services with a continual focus on obstetric care. Delivering babies safely and coordinating patient care at the hospital remain central to his daily responsibilities.

Currently, Dr. Kessler operates a solo private practice while sharing office space with a group of physicians he has known since his residency days. His primary focus is on obstetrics and high-risk obstetrics — a commitment he has maintained for more than 20 years — which allows him to deliver individualized care to patients while collaborating with colleagues who share his dedication to safety and clinical excellence.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Kessler spent more than a decade in a small-group, high-risk private practice in the Manhattan area, further honing his expertise in complex obstetric cases and deepening his understanding of patient-centered care. Prior to this, he was a full-time staff member at New York Hospital in Manhattan for about 13 years after completing his residency. During this tenure, he directed the third-year medical student clerkship for over a decade, teaching medical students from Cornell University and shaping future generations of physicians. He also held the position of director of gynecology for two years.

Dr. Kessler's journey into medicine is a testament to his resilience and determination. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1974, he faced significant challenges gaining admission to a United States medical school due to intense competition during the 1970s. Undeterred, he chose to pursue a Doctor of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico, graduating in 1978. Despite not knowing Spanish initially, he undertook six months of intensive language study before beginning four years of rigorous coursework entirely in Spanish. Following his graduation, he completed the Fifth Pathway Program with nine months of clinical rotations at what is now Interfaith Hospital in Brooklyn.

Dedicated to the ideals of continuous learning, Dr. Kessler then matched into the residency program at Weill Cornell Medical Center, completing his training in 1982 — an experience he describes as transformative due to the exceptional mentorship he received from senior residents and attending physicians. He credits these mentors for shaping his approach to medicine and continues to value lifelong learning, often sharing with residents that ongoing education is one of the most rewarding aspects of a medical career.

Alongside his academic degrees, Dr. Kessler is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and holds memberships with prominent organizations including the New York Obstetrical Society and the New York Medical Society. As a reflection of his standing in the medical community, he is also recognized as a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Kessler's decision to specialize in obstetrics emerged from the clinical rotations he undertook during his medical school years. His experience in pediatrics led him to realize it was not the right fit due to frequent illnesses he endured during his rotations, while internal medicine felt too slow-paced and surgery did not align with his values despite his interest in surgical techniques. Obstetrics offered a unique combination: working with younger patients through pivotal life events, building lasting relationships and engaging in focused surgical practice within the pelvic region. The field's blend of fulfillment and challenge resonated deeply with every facet of his professional aspirations.

In honor of his outstanding leadership and impact across education and patient care, Dr. Kessler was presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2017, the Chanel Award in 2006 and a Teaching Award from the chief residents in obstetrics and gynecology in 1988 and 2017.

Happily married to his spouse Deborah and a proud father of two children, Dr. Kessler leads a rich and fulfilling family life and enjoys biking, traveling and spending time with his loved ones as a balance to his professional duties.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Kessler remains deeply committed to advancing quality assurance within the obstetrics and gynecology department by collaborating with dedicated colleagues who share his passion for improving patient safety and clinical performance. He finds great joy in guiding patients through pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum care — often serving multiple generations within families — which creates enduring connections across time. This continuity is among the most rewarding aspects of his work as he continues to strive for excellence in every facet of patient care and departmental leadership.
