Academic and Professional Career

Dr. Sood has more than three decades of experience spanning academic teaching, industrial work, applied research, and professional service. He has served as Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Chemical Technology, Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur, since May 2017. He joined the institution in April 2000 and progressed through the positions of Assistant Professor at various stages and Associate Professor before becoming Professor.

His academic responsibilities have included teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, curriculum development, academic administration, participation in postgraduate and doctoral selection committees, and student grievance redressal. Over the course of his career, he has taught more than 2,500 undergraduate students, guided 22 M.Tech. students, and supervised two doctoral researchers.

Research and Areas of Specialization

Dr. Sood's principal areas of specialization are chemical reaction engineering and polymer reaction engineering, particularly the mathematical modelling of emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization processes and reactors. His research encompasses particle-size distribution modelling, population balance models, particle nucleation kinetics, particle growth kinetics, coagulation effects, and bimodal phases. These studies contribute to the understanding of polymer production, with applications in adhesives, coatings, paints, and other industrial products. He is also interested in environmentally sustainable technologies and green polymerization processes.

Education and Academic Achievements

Dr. Sood earned his B.Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 1988. His academic record began early: he stood first in his class from KG2 through Class XI and secured second position in KG1 and Class XII. He was named All-Round Best Boy in the primary section in Class V and served as School Captain in Class XII.

He qualified in several competitive entrance examinations. In 1984, he secured an All India Rank of 847 in the IIT Joint Entrance Examination, Rank 189 in the University of Roorkee engineering entrance examination, Rank 432 in the Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College entrance examination, and Rank 62 in the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad entrance examination. In 1988, he achieved All India Rank 2 in the Graduate Aptitude Test Examination in Chemical Engineering (GATE).

During his final year at IIT Kanpur, Dr. Sood undertook a project under Professor Anil Kumar in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The project, titled "Modelling of Polymerisation of Urea and Formaldehyde using Functional Group Approach," led to a research paper published in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science in 1990, Volume 40, pages 1473–1486. During the same year, he received a job offer from Gharda Chemicals Ltd., Mumbai.

Dr. Sood earned his M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1991. His research there focused on modelling particle-size distribution in emulsion polymerization.

Dr. Sood earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow (now Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University), in 2006, under the supervision of Professor S. K. Awasthi. His doctoral research focused on modelling of particle size distribution in miniemulsion polymerization. Earlier, he had conducted doctoral research on the same topic at Lehigh University under the supervision of Professor M. S. El-Aasser.

Industrial Experience and Consultancy

Dr. Sood's professional experience extends beyond academia. In 1995, he worked as Assistant Product Manager in the Plant and Process Design Automation Group at Hindustan Office Products. From 1996 to 1997, he served as Senior Systems Analyst in Research and Development at Vam Organic Chemicals Ltd., Gajraula. From 1997 to 1998, he worked as a Project Engineer at the Indian Institute of Petroleum.

He has also undertaken a consultancy assignment for Bajrang Petrochemicals Pvt. Ltd. and has been serving as Senior Consultant at Sustainable Systems Design Enterprises. These experiences have complemented his academic and research work by connecting engineering principles with industrial applications.

Publications, Editorial Work, and Professional Service

Dr. Sood has authored 42 research papers and delivered 28 oral and poster presentations. His research interests include mathematical modelling of polymerization processes, particle-size distribution, population balance modelling, and sustainable polymer production.

He has reviewed manuscripts for more than 18 international journals and has held editorial board positions with three journals. He has also served as Editor of Emerging Trends in Chemical Engineering, published by STM Journals, India, and as session chair at international conferences. These activities reflect his engagement in scientific communication, peer review, and the wider research community.
