Clarke's Summer Inaugural Auction - Monday, June 30, 2008

Monday June 30th Auction features single owner art collection of 17th -20th Century European and American paintings and sculpture; antique European carved stone and oak figures; a pair of colossal bronze Foo Lions; 18th and 19th European and American furniture as well as midcentury modern design.

    /24-7PressRelease/ - LARCHMONT, NY, June 23, 2008 - On Monday June 30, Clarke's final auction of the spring season will again offer 400+ lots, with fine art and antiques drawn from a single owner Westchester estate and additions from homes in Rowayton, Central Park West and Roslyn Long Island.

Fine art includes paintings and sculpture by or attributed to Maurice Sterne, Jean Degottex, Gabriel Dauchot, Nina Balaban, Charles Burdick, Andre Derain, Paul Cezanne, Sergio De Castro, Betty Schlemm, Jorge Noceda Sanchez, Ford Beckman, Valfred Thelin, James Arthur O'Connor, and Francis Tailleux, some with Galerie Cardo origins. Also intriguing are a fine 1911 color drawing of a Southwest Indian signed McKinley, a period oil portrait on copper of John Milton, a 18th C. oil attributed to Pier Leone Ghezzi and a drawing attributed to Frans Van Mieris.

Highlights also include a pair of massive patinated Foo lions; carved antique marble and limestone figures; antique carved wooden statues, possibly 16th C.; polychrome figures, and antique bronzes including a classical archangel on plinth.

Furniture includes 18th C. French and Spanish furniture, 18th -19th C. mahogany and American antiques and highly decorative carved, veneered and marble-topped pieces.

Decorative arts includes a pair of French bronze girondelles, possibly Baccarat; 19th C. bronze candelabra; pairs of giltwood pedestals; 18th C. and earlier polychrome and carved wooden figures; Tiffany clock; gilt and embossed antique leather panels, Limoges services and sterling silver.
Finally, Midcentury Modern, a Clarke speciality, includes works by or attributed to Raymond Loewy, John Stuart, Moreddi and the potter Beatrice Wood.
