Indentifying Fat Compartments in Cheeks Advances Cosmetic Augmentation

Cheek implants and fat injections with fillers were very popular in 2007, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Now, there is a new way to perform cheek augmentation to give women the face they desire.

/24-7PressRelease/ - CHICAGO, IL, August 30, 2008 - Thousands of women look at Angelina Jolie and Jessica Alba and envy the structure of their cheeks. As a result, cheek implants and fat injections with fillers were very popular in 2007, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The idea that women like Jolie and Alba, as well as half a dozen other Hollywood stars, have the facial structure that women across the country desire is not a new development. What is new is the way in which cheek augmentation can be performed in the future so that women looking to enhance their aesthetic appearance can have some of the same facial structure as these celebrities.

Right in Front of Us the Whole Time

Cosmetic surgeons doing research at UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered compartments of fat in the cheeks and their relation to hollowness due to aging. They say that the identification of the boundaries of specific fat compartments may hold the key to "facial rejuvenation involving the cheeks" and that they have broken new ground with this discovery.

By using special dye to identify and then map these areas beneath the skin, the researchers have found that when these hidden compartments are restored using different procedures, the result is a youthful appearance that is able to lessen the haggard or hollow look of the overall face. By restoring the fat in these compartments, lines around the nose and mouth are lessened or eliminated and volume loss beneath the eyes is restored. The hope is that by identifying these specific areas, properly filling the compartments will use less fat or filler.

Dr. Rod Rohrich, who is lead author of the study and chairman of cosmetic surgery at UT Southwestern, says this cheek fat compartment has completely changed how they look at facial aging. Not only that, but the process to correct it has also changed. "No longer do we remove fat without pre-op analysis or merely lift the cheek," he says. "We must now lift and fill the face to restore a natural youthful, unoperated appearance."
