NEW Maggie's Organics Sock Monkeys Support US Worker-Owned Cooperative

Cuddly and eco-friendly stuffed animals provide jobs for US apparel workers. Made from leftover Maggie's Classic Crew Socks made with Certified Organic Cotton and polyester mill scraps, each Sock Monkey is a sustainable and socially responsible gift anyone can feel good about giving.

/24-7PressRelease/ - YPSILANTI, MI, September 05, 2008 - Having already revolutionized the sock world one step at a time, Maggie's Organics is once again evolving the concept by introducing a line of eco-adorable Sock Monkeys—the first installment in Maggie's Menagerie collection. The Sock Monkeys are unique because not only do they save apparel products from piling up in landfills, they are also the first product made by a NEW 100 percent worker-owned cooperative located in North Carolina.

"Maggie's Sock Monkeys are fulfilling our dream of providing US workers a chance to build and run their own businesses. They are cuddly, fun, and an inspired creation that we all can share," says Maggie's Organics President Bená Burda. "Supporting worker-owned businesses that understand the importance of organic practices aligns with our mission to produce environmentally sustainable products and promote worker independence."

Each Sock Monkey is created from leftover Maggie's Classic Crew Socks made with Certified Organic Cotton and are stuffed with soft, yet durable polyester mill scraps. The process of designing the monkeys was a collaborative effort between the Cooperative and Maggie's.

Available in a wide array of colors, each Sock Monkey is handmade and carefully crafted to display its own distinctive personality. The monkeys feature specially constructed details such as two-toned arms, sewn-on faces and even slightly mischievous smiles! Plus, Maggie's Organics Sock Monkeys are easy to clean—just wash in warm water with mild detergent and tumble dry on low. But best of all, each Sock Monkey is an eco-friendly and socially responsible gift anyone can feel good about giving.

A symbol of America's ingenuity and perseverance during trying times, the first sock monkeys were created during the Great Depression by imaginative housewives. Maggie's present day incarnation of this American icon is also a symbol of hope and perseverance—with a modern twist.

"We like the idea that we are taking an American classic and turning it into something new and exciting," says Maggie's VP of Sales Doug Wilson. "By teaming up with a US worker-owned cooperative and utilizing leftover material so it doesn't end up in landfills we are making a statement about what we believe is a fresh—and much needed—approach to making a high-quality product."
