KNOXVILLE, TN, October 24, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan Madison Smith, Associate Professor at The University of Tennessee, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Educational Public Health and Safety. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.

With more than 30 years of experience in education, Dr. Smith specializes in public health and safety. At her current post, she is responsible for teaching injury prevention and emergency management. Additionally, she conducts research and analyses policies regarding the emergency evacuation of high-risk populations. Director of the University of Tennessee's Safety Center, Dr. Smith also serves as the coordinator of the UT Graduate Safety Program. As a graduate faculty member, she coordinates and teaches graduate students in emergency management and public health. She and her graduate students created the ten-point checklist for emergency preparedness used to assess preparedness by many schools and other private and public institutions.

A published author, Dr. Smith's publications include a recent award-winning paper entitled 'Disaster Response: Community Mental Health Service Capacity in the United States.' Another recent paper presented at international emergency management society conferences is entitled 'An Incident Safety Officers Critical Role in Response Operations.' She has received the Distinguished Service to Safety Award, the highest award given by the National Safety Council. She was also honored with a research paper award by The International Emergency Management Society in June 2008. The key to her success? Love for her profession, a commitment to safety and public health, and a desire to pass her knowledge on to others.

Dr. Smith received her Doctor of Education with concentrations in safety and public health from the University of Tennessee in 1989, a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health in 1975 and a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Biology and Chemistry from Berry College in 1973.
