Online Store Reports Booming Sales Despite Economic Downturn

Attention to personal service and quality, position an online boutique store as a winner despite the state of the economy.

CROFON, MD, December 13, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A unique online store reported record sales for November despite the overall economic downturn in the country. Kristen Becker, CEO of Kir DeVries attributes the increase in sales to her personal philosophy of quality and service.

"From the beginning, my goal has been to deliver quality unique items and provide a personal touch. Just last week, the store ran out of a particular Ibride serving tray, so I got on the phone and asked one of my competitors if they could fill the order. It made the customer happy and even if we didn't make that sale, I know the customer will return to the store," said Becker.

Kir DeVries carries a mix of designer goods for the home and family. Each product is chosen by Becker herself with an eye for d cor that will satisfy function as well as the aesthetic. A former design professor, Becker has over 20 years in design and retail experience.

"I appreciate products that are unusual and beautiful. For instance, we carry the popular Shinzi Kahto line, he is a well known Zakka designer that creates fun yet practical things you can use everyday, such as his "duex mugs" or his eyeglass cases. People see them and fall in love," said Becker. "That's what I want everyone to do, come to the store and fall in love with that special something that will make them happy."

Kir DeVries offerings range from the very affordable to the high end. And Kir DeVries makes gift giving easy by providing an individual shopping service as well as elegant gift wrap.

"While my most frequent customers are women, we have more and more men turning to the store to find that special something for the women in their lives, whether it's a girlfriend or a mother," said Becker. "Men appreciate the suggestions we give them and they are relieved that we will take care of everything, including handwriting special notes."

The economic downturn has challenged the big box stores. Recently, Sears reinstituted the old practice of "lay-away" to capture more customers. Forbes.com reports that retailers are slashing prices to lure customers into their stores. Boutique shops like Kir DeVries are able to more easily position themselves as unique, providing discerning customers with a satisfying shopping experience. Additionally, Kir DeVries seeks out products made in the USA, from individual designers and artists, which appeals to those concerned about the economy.

Becker offers this advice to retailers:

"Always anticipate the next trend and be ready to move quickly. Flexibility is key and customer service is critically important. Be willing to go the extra mile and you will create customer loyalty."
