SEATTLE, WA, February 25, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- BOTOX Cosmetic is designed to temporarily correct wrinkles and lines on the face and neck due to age and stress. An injectable agent, BOTOX Cosmetic is botulinum toxin type A and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve eye-muscle disorders and smooth out facial lines.

BOTOX Cosmetic is effective in the treatment of lines:

• On your forehead
• Between your eyes
• At the base of your nose
• At the corners of your eyes (often called "crow's feet)

This 10-minute treatment is simple, non-surgical and effective in treating deep lines that develop over time. Unlike other cosmetic surgery procedures, BOTOX Cosmetic is minimally invasive and does not require any downtime or recovery period.

How it works

BOTOX Cosmetic works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles, and keeps them relaxed for as long as four months.

A highly qualified cosmetic surgeon will determine precisely where to administer several tiny injections to achieve your optimum results. For example, the frown line between the eyebrows is caused by the action of a muscle called your "corrugator." If you frown and touch your head between your eyebrows, you will be able to feel this muscle thicken. By injecting BOTOX Cosmetic directly into your corrugator, you are preventing this muscle from being able to draw your eyebrows together, thus causing these "frown lines" to gradually fade.

While no anesthesia is required, your area may be numbed with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to the injections. Discomfort is minimal and brief; most patients compare BOTOX Cosmetic treatments to that of a bug bite.

Post-operative conditions

Side effects are highly unlikely. However, some people have experienced temporary bruising at the injection site. If this happens, it can be concealed with makeup. You will be able to return to work and resume your normal daily activities the minute you leave our office.

The results of your treatment will begin to appear in three to 10 days. Your treated muscles will slowly start to regain their function over a three- to five-month period. When your lines and wrinkles do begin to reappear, all you will need is a simple repeat treatment to maintain your youthful appearance.

Other uses

Aside from cosmetic purposes, BOTOX treatments can also be used to treat:

• Excessive sweating
• Muscle spasms and jaw pain
• Chronic pain in the face and neck
• Jaw tension
• Migraine headaches

Am I a candidate?

Any woman or man between the ages of 18 and 65 who is unhappy with the appearance of lines or wrinkles in the face and neck is generally a good candidate for BOTOX Cosmetic. Thousands of appearance-conscious men and women take advantages of the wrinkle-eliminating procedure each year.

Because there have been so few side effects, most people are able to undergo BOTOX Cosmetic treatments. However, it is advised that if you fall into the following categories, you should discuss with your doctor whether this treatment is right for you:

• Pregnant women
• People suffering from neurological disorders
• Those taking regular medications
