PARAMUS, NJ, February 26, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Professor Magali Jerez, Chairwoman of World Languages and Cultures Discipline for the Paramus, Hackensack and Lyndhurst Campuses of Bergen Community College, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of language instruction.
With 21 years of experience, Professor Jerez is widely respected as an expert in language and cultural instruction, particularly Spanish. Her primary responsibilities include teaching three language courses, writing course requirements, and working with instructors of languages that include American Sign Language, Arabic, Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Russian and Spanish. Additionally, she is tasked with administering language programs at the Paramus and New Meadowlands campuses, hiring new instructors, mentoring and training new faculty members, and coordinating growth programs to increase the number of languages taught at the college. Since taking over World Languages and Cultures Discipline, Professor Jerez managed to expand the language program from five to eleven languages. Honored by Bergen Community College president G. Jeremiah Ryan for her contributions and selected for a Ph.D. scholarship by the U.S. Department of Education, she attributes her success to her diligence, determination and love for teaching and languages.
Professor Jerez has doctoral studies from Seton Hall University and her Master of Arts in Language and Education from Montclair State University in 1976. She is a member of the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the National Association of Professional Women, the American Association of University Women, the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the New Jersey Education Association and the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey Association, and serves as music director of New Jersey Churches. Also an author and songwriter, Professor Jerez is currently working on the 6th edition of her book "Empecemos," which was first published in 1997, and is credited for composing numerous religious songs in Spanish, most of which have been recorded. She wrote the song, "Oremos por la paz," which was performed at the UNESCO Palace in Paris in 2003. Her plans for the next five years include expanding Bergen Community College's language program to include Hebrew and Greek.
