"Domestic and Family Violence - Still Prevalent and Taboo in 2009" Aired on Social Radio Network BlogTalkRadio

iAscend interviews Linda Hughey, President of CAN and former victim of domestic violence, live on "Get the Hell Out" Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 9:00 pm MT.

AURORA, CO, March 23, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Knowledge and awareness of domestic, family and intimate-partner violence has increased. "There are more movies, more news, and more information than ever. The news coverage of Chris Brown and Rihanna proves such. However, the subject remains one of shame, one that is hidden and taboo. We don't see much change. We still have a long way to go," asserts Ms. Chapman, the show's host.

According to a National Violence Against Women survey, 22% of women are physically assaulted by a partner or date during their lifetime and nearly 5.3 million partner victimizations occur each year among U.S. women ages 18 and older resulting in 2 million injuries and 1,300 deaths. That is 25% of women were assaulted and 7.6% of men were assaulted or raped by a spouse, cohabitating partner or dating partner/acquaintance at some time. More than 1 million women and 371,000 men are stalked by partners each year. Physical aggression occurs in 1 in 3 teen dating relationships. Often time, mental illness contributes to the violence.

Linda Hughey, founder of CAN, Competent Assistance for Nonprofits, Inc., lived the violence as a child in an upper-middle-class family. As an adult, she overcame the brutality of a sociopath and tells of her transition from victim to victor. She tells her story of victory with passion and conviction, leading other women to their own hopeful future.
