CHICAGO, IL, April 04, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- If you are like thousands of other Chicago, Illinois residents suffering with a gap in your smile caused by a missing tooth, or if you are looking for a way to improve the fit of your dentures or other dental restorations, dental implants can be the solution you have been searching for.

Dental implants essentially replace the entire root portion of the tooth so that a porcelain replacement tooth can be attached to the implant and fill the space in your smile. Dental implants can be used for:

- Anchoring Bridges
- Anchoring Dentures
- Anchoring Partial Dentures
- Replacing One or More Teeth
- Improving Jawbone Structure

The dental implant process begins with an initial consultation with a cosmetic dentist in your area. If you live in the Glenview, Illinois area, Dr. David Dooley performs dental implant procedures so patients can achieve the smile they used to have.

During the dental implant initial consultation, your cosmetic dentist will determine if you are a good candidate for one or multiple dental implants. They will also determine the health of your jawbone; if you have suffered from jawbone deterioration, you may be a better candidate for one form of dental implant over another. There are a few different forms of dental implants:

Root Form - dental implants that are placed directly into the jawbone where the tooth root used to be

Sub-Periosteal - if there is inadequate jawbone structure, this dental implant can be used, it is a piece of metal that fits around the jawbone, gripping it to stay in place

Plate Form - a metal plate is implanted into the jawbone so that the replacement tooth can be attached

Transosseous - the dental implant is a piece of metal that is screwed into the jawbone

After the cosmetic dentist has determined exactly what type of dental implant is best for you, they will help you schedule your dental implant appointments. During the first appointment, the dental implant will be placed either into or onto the jawbone and the gum tissue is closed around it.

The dental implant is then left there for a few weeks to allow it to fuse to the bone tissue in your jaw. This will ensure that your dental implant acts as much like a natural tooth as possible and provide you with the best dental health possible. After the dental implant has fused to the bone, an abutment will be attached to the dental implant that will hold your replacement tooth.

Once the abutment has been attached and your gums have healed, your cosmetic dentist will provide you with a new dental bridge, porcelain tooth, or set of dentures that will attach to the dental implant. The result is an aesthetically pleasing and functional dental restoration.

If you live in the Chicago, Evanston, or Glenview, Chicago area and would like to learn more about dental implants and how they can improve your smile, please visit Dr. David Dooley's dental implant website to schedule an initial consultation at Colonial Dental Group.
