Meet the mystic musical maestro
Abida Parveen is a distinguished Pakistani Sufi singer, composer and musician regarded by many as the "Queen of Sufi music". With an extensive repertoire of more than 100 albums and a remarkable career that has spanned almost five decades; she began singing at the age of 3 and is now established as one of the world's greatest mystic singers touring internationally since 1993 with her first concert at Buena Park in California. She has also taken up a central role in mentoring the new generation of singers, acting as a judge on talent shows such as Pakistan Idol and STAR Voice of India.

Ms. Parveen initially started performing at Dargahs (Sufi shrines) and Urs (death anniversaries of Sufi saints) in the 70's but her major breakthrough came in 1973 when she performed a traditional Sindhi song on Radio Pakistan. Since then she has broken record after record in her journey to become Pakistan's preeminent female vocalist, culminating with the conferment of the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2012 which is Pakistan's second highest civilian award. Singer or revolutionary?
Ms. Parveen is an enigmatic persona who has been shattering long-established customs her entire life. She is the current representative of a well-established Sufi musical dynasty based in the Sindhi city of Larkana, also home to the very influential Bhutto political family. Her father, Ghulam Haider, realised honing his daughter's gift was more important than following tradition and thus trained her throughout childhood.

Outside of the world of music, Abida Parveen has been instrumental in overturning gender conventions in other domains as well. She is an accomplished artist and has her own gallery which showcases her distinctive jewellery, paintings and clothing.

An expert in an enormous variety of different genres from Ghazals to Qawwalis to Sufi rock, her forte is Kafis, classical Sufi poetry that is accompanied by percussion and harmonium. She has sold out shows all over the world headlining festivals in Oslo, New York and Amsterdam to mention just a few.
