GLENDALE, CA, August 01, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Domnita Dumitrescu, PhD, a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Dumitrescu celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A preeminent linguist and Spanish language teacher, Dr. Dumitrescu holds the esteemed title of professor emerita at California State University, where she taught for 29 years. She is a celebrated scholar, translator, and leader in the linguistics community, with numerous teaching awards to her name and a renowned expertise in Spanish pragmatics, socio-pragmatics of Spanish (with special emphasis on verbal politeness) , and comparative studies between Spanish and Romanian. Before moving to California, Dr. Dumitrescu advanced Spanish language education in her native Romania, and continues to contribute to the scholarly journal Hispania as a review editor.

The city of Bucharest claims the honor of being Dr. Dumitrescu's birthplace, and is the city that nurtured her linguistic pursuits. Then, under a communist regime, Romania had a sister relationship with Fidel Castro's Cuba, which prompted the University of Bucharest to develop a Spanish language program. Founded by luminary linguistics scholar Iorgu Iordan, the program mentored Dr. Dumitrescu, who had already studied French and English with relish. She began teaching as an assistant professor with the university in 1966, becoming a tenured associate professor in 1974. Her instruction at the University of Bucharest was extremely productive, resulting in national television appearances, textbooks, studies, and appearances in international conferences.

Despite a lack of resources and the difficulty of traveling under a communist regime, Dr. Dumitrescu was slowly able to gain the peerage of international linguistics professionals. She remembers visiting Spain in 1968 for summer graduate courses and studying with such scholars as Manuel Alvar, Humberto Lopez Morales, Margherita Morreale, and Bernard Pottier.

In 1984, Dr. Dumitrescu arrived in America, and with the support of colleagues in the profession, was able to earn a Master's degree from the University of Southern California in 1987 and a doctoral degree in 1990. One of her earliest exposures to American academia was with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, where she has served as president of the Southern California chapter, and which awarded her a 2000 Teacher of the Year Award. She began teaching in California as an assistant professor of Spanish, becoming a full professor in 1995. In 2016, she retired from teaching at California State University, Los Angeles.

In 2011, Dr. Dumitrescu released "Aspects of Spanish Pragmatics" with Peter Lang, one of the latest in a career of visiting professorship, review, editorial work, conferences, and a deep understanding of Hispanic culture. Other noted works include editorial contributions to the Journal of Spanish Language, Sociocultural Pragmatics, and Language and Dialogue. Dr. Dumitrescu notably visited Argentina as a Fulbright scholar in 1993, teaching at universities in Buenos Aires, Tucuman, Del Comahue, and San Juan. She is the recipient of a 2007 to 2008 President's Distinguished Professor Award as well as a 2003 to 2004 Outstanding Professor Award from California State University.
Dr. Dumitrescu is a member of the Modern Language Association, the Linguistic Society of America, the International Association of Hispanists, the Latin American Association of Linguistics and Philology, the Linguistic Association of the Southwest, and Sigma Delta Pi (whose Honorary President she has been since 2011). She is currently working on the 24th edition of the Dictionary of the Spanish Language as a delegate of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language, editing "L2Spanish Pragmatics: From Research to Practice" with Patricia Andueza from the University of Evansville, and recently finished editing a book with Diana Bravo from the University of Stockholm.

For a lifetime of dedication to linguistics and pioneering spirit in academia, Dr. Dumitrescu was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
