The documentary is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Douglas A. Blackmon. Blackmon's composition is a powerful account of how America surreptitiously maintained slavery under the guise of peonage and forced labor from 1863 to the 1960s.

It is absolutely asinine to, on one hand, acknowledge the history and intended ugliness of the n-word when it flows from the lips of a white or non-black person, but foolishly ignore the history when it flows from the lips of a black user.

The n-word (nigger) has throughout American history proven to be synonymous with any heinous acts connected to it, thus any Black African American's use of the pejorative term is the same as sanctioning all the sordid acts associated with the term.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger was crucified and raked over the coals by Black America and the news media for her unfortunate use of the n-word, however, some of the 2011 Grammy Award nominees solidifies the point Dr. Schlessinger was attempting to make.
