BELLINGHAM, WA, January 24, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A holiday food drive at Birch Equipment locations in Northwest Washington & Southeast Alaska netted close to $5,000 and 600 plus pounds of food for area food banks. The company has supported food banks annually, and this was the first time Birch coordinated with other community businesses and customers.
"It was an education for us," said Mount Vernon Facility Manager Amanda Cecotti, "Both in terms of the broad outreach and support these food banks provide as well as the amazing ways our local businesses support our communities. We witnessed tremendous generosity, including an anonymous business donation of 500 pounds of potatoes." Birch Equipment donated $2,500 to the cause and invited businesses and individuals to participate -- see contributor list below -- during the month-long holiday food drive. The program received praise from food bank leaders.
"It was an awesome fundraiser," said Bellingham Food Bank Executive Director, Mike Cohen. "With every $100 cash donation, we can buy 1,000 pounds of food. The amount we received from this program bought us close to 20,000 pounds of food." Each month, Bellingham Food Bank distributes over a quarter-million pounds of food in response to more than 11,000 requests for assistance.
Skagit Valley Neighbors in need Board Member Dova Thirsk noted they can buy food in bulk for roughly 9-cents per pound, so the monetary support will go a long way for their organization as well. There are 13 food banks and one central distribution center in Skagit County that served 50,000 individuals and 13,000 household visits in 2012. As a company, Birch Equipment donates a minimum of $100,000 a year to its local communities, and food banks will be a more concerted focus moving forward.
"We live in the best country in the world, but there's a lot going wrong. The best thing we can do is be well run, provide entry level to career jobs, offer good product and service, and support our communities. Most businesses out there are doing the same thing," said owner/CEO Sarah Rothenbuhler. "There's good people out there trying who need a boost. Who doesn't want to help that?"
