MOUNT DORA, FL, January 01, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rotarian Ralph Cowell, ShelterBoxUSA Ambassador from the Villages, spoke to the Rotary Club of Lake County Golden Triangle at their meeting at Lake Receptions. Cowell shared how Rotary's partner organization, ShelterBox, preplans for natural and manmade disasters by garnering funds to provide emergency shelters and survival supplies to the needy.

The local Rotary Club members donated funds over a two-week period. They amassed $1,000 as a group. Two members then donated an additional $500 and challenged the community and any other members to match their $500 to fund an additional ShelterBox kit.

ShelterBoxes have "In addition to the tent, there is a range of other survival equipment including thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, essential in areas where temperatures plummet at nightfall. Where malaria is prevalent, mosquito nets are supplied, as well as life-saving means of water purification. Water supplies often become contaminated after a major disaster, as infrastructure and sanitation systems are destroyed. This presents a secondary but no less dangerous threat to survivors than the initial disaster itself. Our water purification equipment, the LifeStraw . . ., can provide a typical family up to three years' worth of clean and safe water." http://www.ShelterBoxUSA.org.

ShelterBox stages prepared boxes in five locations around the world in anticipation of the next disaster. The volunteers can then load helicopters, boats, planes, or donkey packs to immediately deliver the life saving equipment. Rotarians and Scouts around the world deploy on a moments notice to assist in the delivery and implementation of the disaster relief.

Community members who wish to help the RCLCGT raise their contribution level of the member challenge can send funds to the club at P.O. Box 1331, Eustis, FL 32726. You may also contribute individually on the website http://www.ShelterBoxUSA.org.

Proceeds from Rotary Club events support charities in the area and around the world. More information about the charitable work is at http://www.Rotary.org. The Rotary Club of Lake County Golden Triangle is at http://www.facebook.com/RotaryClubofLakeCountyGoldenTriangle.
