Early on in his career, he completed a residency at the Martinez VA Medical Center for the University of California, Davis and a research fellowship with the National Institute of Mental Health. Over the years, Dr. Bissell found success through the University of Chicago Medical Center, the City of Hope National Medical Center, the Nichols Institute Reference Laboratory, the University of Texas and the Allegheny General Hospital.
A diplomate through the American Board of Pathology, Dr. Bissell initially pursued an education at the University of Arizona, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. He continued his studies with a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in neurobiology from Stanford University. He concluded his academic efforts with a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Bissell is affiliated with the College of American pathologists as an Emeritus Member, and has been affiliated with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, The American Association of Clinical Chemistry, and the Clinical Laboratory Management Association.
