Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Currently serving as the chief manufacturing officer at SES AI Corporation, Mr. Li has established himself as a prominent figure in the clean energy and manufacturing sectors. Established in 2012, SES manufactures AI-enhanced high-energy density and high-power density lithium-metal and lithium-ion batteries, which are the first batteries in the world to contain electrolyte materials discovered by AI. In Mr. Li's role at the company, he oversees manufacturing operations globally, with the headquarters in Boston focusing on material science and proof-of-concept work in chemistry; an engineering center in Shanghai dedicated to cell commercialization and manufacturing; and two production lines in South Korea. His expertise in clean energy, material science and AI applications has been vital in advancing SES AI's mission.
Prior to joining SES AI, Mr. Li was the senior vice president at Hyzon Motors from 2021 to 2023, where he played a significant role in providing power solutions for fuel cell heavy-duty trucks. He also served as president of Hyzon Motors China from October 2021 to August 2022, during which time he successfully built a supply chain and established a new manufacturing site to make fuel cell systems and batteries in Bolingbrook, Illinois. Under his leadership, Hyzon Motors expanded from a small team of approximately 20 employees to a full production line operation.
From 2007 to 2021, Mr. Li held various roles at Wanxiang America, including project manager and executive vice president of Wanxiang Clean Energy USA. He was instrumental in building a clean energy platform for Wanxiang Group overseas, initially focusing on solar energy before transitioning to batteries and electric vehicles. Notably, he led the acquisition of A123 Systems in 2013, transforming it into a multicultural collaboration that operates across China, the United States and Europe. Equally dedicated to sharing vital education and life experiences, he was part of a summer study program launch that encouraged U.S. students to study abroad in China and learn about its culture as well as clean energy technologies. With all expenses paid, the program allowed 1,500 students to expand their horizons and contribute to cultural exchanges between China and the United States.
Mr. Li's own academic background includes a Master of Economics in econometrics with a major in quantitative economics and a Bachelor of Physics with a major in materials science from Tsinghua University. His education provided him with a strong foundation in quantitative analysis and materials science, which has been critical to his success in the clean energy sector.
Devoted to continuous learning and staying aware of the field's latest developments, Mr. Li is a voting member of the Battery Standards Advanced Battery Concepts Committee at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International. His commitment to sharing his knowledge and insights on advancing battery technology is further demonstrated through his internal publications at SAE.
Also known for his civic contributions, Mr. Li has served as a corporate mentor at the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Center of Shanghai University since 2020. He was on the program advisory committee for renewable energy at Triton College from 2019 to 2021 as well as an executive council member of the Institute for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern University for 10 years. In recognition of his leadership skills, technological advancements and commitment to educating future generations, he was honored with the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Tsinghua Alumni Association of Greater Chicago in 2011 and received multiple Excellent Manager Awards during his successful tenure at Wanxiang Group.
Looking to the future with optimism, Mr. Li aspires to leverage AI technology to advance the global battery business, particularly focusing on enhancing SES AI's position in the United States. He believes that AI will transform the industry landscape by enabling faster advancements in high-energy density and safety standards. With his extensive experience, strategic vision and unwavering desire to help others, he is poised to make a lasting impact on the field of clean energy technology and society at large.
