Why Diversity and Inclusion Are the True Drivers of Innovation: Nicholas Sgalitzer on the Vision Behind NexTech Labs
Press Release November 20, 2025
According to Nicholas Sgalitzer, known to colleagues simply as Nick, true innovation doesn't come from code alone.

BIRMINGHAM, AL, November 20, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In an age where technology evolves at breakneck speed and companies race to out-innovate one another, most conversations about progress tend to center around tools, platforms, and emerging trends. But according to Nicholas Sgalitzer, known to colleagues simply as Nick, true innovation doesn't come from code alone. It comes from people. It comes from diversity of thought, inclusion of experiences, and the deliberate act of building technology that reflects the world it hopes to serve.

As a Birmingham, Alabama native and seasoned technologist with more than 15 years in the industry, Nicholas Sgalitzer has become widely respected for blending cutting-edge engineering with deeply human principles. His portfolio reads like a roadmap of the Southeast's evolution into a modern tech hub: artificial intelligence initiatives, machine learning platforms, secure cloud infrastructure, and intuitive apps that support real users in real moments of need. Nick is known for being the expert who can talk seamlessly about neural networks one moment and the social impact of technology the next. And for him, those two worlds cannot be separated.

"As companies compete to build smarter systems," Nick explains, "they often forget the simplest truth: innovation happens when every voice is at the table. Technology that excludes people is already outdated."

This philosophy lies at the heart of NexTech Labs, Nicholas Sgalitzer's newest venture and arguably his most ambitious yet. Built on the belief that inclusive design leads to more impactful products, NexTech Labs is positioned to become a leading force in the next wave of southeastern innovation. And if you ask Nicholas, the mission is actually simple: empower diverse teams so they can build solutions that reflect the world's real complexity.

A Vision Rooted in Experience and Community
Nick's understanding of inclusive innovation isn't theoretical, it's lived. His journey began at Auburn University, where he earned his degree in Computer Science and launched his very first mobile app. That early project, built in a dorm room with limited resources and endless curiosity, became the foundation of his entrepreneurial mindset. More importantly, it showed Nicholas the importance of collaboration. His app only succeeded because he invited students from different backgrounds such as designers, business majors, fellow coders, to contribute to it.

That collaborative spirit followed him into his career, influencing every venture he built. Over the years, Nick has developed solutions for healthcare networks, transportation companies, and mental health organizations, always driven by one principle: technology must solve problems for real people, not just impress other engineers.

This people-first approach didn't just shape his own projects, it inspired him to help others build theirs. As co-founder of DevHive South, a startup incubator in downtown Birmingham, Nicholas Sgalitzer has spent the last five years providing mentorship, guidance, and strategic support to early-stage entrepreneurs. Under Nick's leadership, DevHive South has helped launch more than 30 startups, many of which have gone on to secure major funding and national recognition.

Some of these founders come from nontraditional backgrounds: first-generation college students, former teachers, young parents balancing jobs, and professionals transitioning from unrelated industries. And Nicholas sees those diverse stories as the incubator's greatest strength.
"When you bring people together who have lived different lives, who solve problems from different angles, you get better ideas," Nick says. "Diversity isn't a checkbox, it's the engine of innovation."

NexTech Labs: Building Technology for a Broader Future
NexTech Labs is the next evolution of that philosophy. With a mission centered on inclusion-driven innovation, the company is positioned not just to develop high-impact technologies but to transform the way teams approach problem-solving. Under Nicholas's leadership, NexTech Labs will focus on building enterprise solutions that prioritize accessibility, human connection, and intentional design.

Whether the team is developing AI-driven tools for patient monitoring or building cloud-based systems for small businesses, the emphasis remains the same: diverse minds create resilient solutions.

"One of the biggest misconceptions in tech," Nick explains, "is that innovation is a solo sport. It's not. The breakthroughs people admire whether it's an AI model or a user-friendly app, come from teams that represent many different lived experiences."

Everything about NexTech Labs reflects this belief. Meetings begin with open discussion rather than pre-set hierarchies. Interns sit beside senior engineers. Designers collaborate directly with product users, ensuring every feature is grounded in reality, not assumption. Nicholas encourages debate, welcomes disagreement, and insists that innovation only happens when people feel safe bringing their whole selves to the table.

A Commitment to Birmingham's Future
Nick's work, however, doesn't stop at entrepreneurship. A proud Birmingham native, he remains committed to shaping the city's future by supporting the next generation of technologists. He volunteers in Birmingham city schools, teaching coding workshops that introduce young students to the world of programming. Many of these classrooms are filled with students who have never met a software engineer before and its something Nicholas sees as a call to action.

"When kids see someone who looks like them, who grew up in the same neighborhoods, succeed in tech, everything changes," Nick says. "They realize tech isn't a world reserved for other people but it's a world they can belong to."

He also partners with nonprofits to bring STEM education to underrepresented communities across Alabama, ensuring that talent and opportunity intersect where they historically have not.

The Heart Behind the Vision
While Nicholas Sgalitzer is known for his technical expertise, those closest to him know there is another side to the innovator: the husband who loves camping trips with his wife and their two dogs, the tinkerer who builds DIY smart home projects on weekends, the mentor who stays late after workshops to answer one more question from an eager student.

That personal authenticity is what gives NexTech Labs its heartbeat. Because for Nick, technology is not an abstract concept, it is a tool for empowerment.

"You cannot innovate for people you don't understand," he says. "And you cannot understand people you don't include."
