WILLISTON, ND, December 23, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph E. Bowling has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Supported by a career spanning over 45 years of professional experience, Mr. Bowling has been a wellsite geologist with Sudbrink Geological Consulting since 2020. In this capacity he has geosteered wells, sampled, analyzed, and recorded characteristics of geological formations, monitored, analyzed, and recorded gas emerging from the well while drilling.
Prior to assuming his role with Sudbrink Geological Consulting, Inc., Mr. Bowling was a wellsite geologist with King Canyon Buffalo, Inc. from 2017 to 2019. During this period, he refined his expertise in geological analysis, using Mass Spectrometry in analysis of wellbore gasses, and contributing to project success through his detailed approach and technical acumen. Between 2010 and 2017, Mr. Bowling was the senior geologist and owner of Bowling Geological Consulting, LLC. In this leadership role, he provided consulting services that drew upon decades of experience in geology in concert with drilling operations onsite. His work included geosteering, advising on drilling strategies for XTO, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Furthermore, from 1993 to 2009, Mr. Bowling worked as a wellsite Geologist for P.L.S. Inc. It was during this time that he made notable contributions to the industry working in concert with engineers pioneering horizontal drilling techniques as a consultant for Hess, Continental Resources, and Nance Petroleum under the guidance of Paul Sagaser's firm. He integrated geology with engineers onsite to enable the successful execution of horizontal wells in formations less frequently drilled today, including the Ratcliffe, Midale, Mission Canyon, Duperow, Stonewall, and Red River Formations in the Williston Basin. Various methods of drilling underbalanced were tested and abandoned as impractical. While working wells for Headington Oil Company under P.L.S., Inc., in an infield well, Mr. Bowling spotted oil shows in the Bakken Formation that led to Headington Oil Co. drilling their first Bakken Horizontal well in Elm Coulee Field in Richland County, Montana. The State's oil production doubled as the field was developed. When XTO bought Headington Oil Company, Mr. Bowling continued to provide services for the new owners.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Bowling served as a wellsite Geologist with G.E.O. Inc. where he had further developed his skills in geological analysis, working his first directional and horizontal wells in Nevada, Wyoming, and Colorado. Prior employment included Norton Christiansen (coring division), E.G. &G. Continental Laboratories, and initial employment in the oil industry with Tooke Engineering Co, from 1979 through 1982, serving as Williston Basin District Field Supervisor from 1980 to 1981, returning to wellsite operations to develop skills.
Throughout his career, Mr. Bowling has maintained membership in the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists (RMAG) and the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA). He became a Licensed Professional Geologist in Wyoming in 1992. Mr. Bowling's academic background includes earning a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from James Madison University in 1978, followed by a year pursuing coursework toward a master's degree in Uranium Geochemistry at the University of North Dakota.
The rigorous education and training he received underpinned his ability to integrate geological theory with practical engineering solutions as part of a team in the development of drilling techniques. He attributes much of his success to a willingness to adapt, especially in the formative years of horizontal drilling when now-established techniques were being developed. Mr. Bowling values collaboration and has worked with both geologists and engineers in pursuit of better outcomes.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Bowling demonstrated civic engagement as a 14-year District Representative for ABATE of North Dakota, and a past member of the Williston Basin Riders. He also served as a Volunteer Fireman with Charles County (MD) Company 6 prior to college.
Looking ahead, Mr. Bowling is dedicated to continued professional development and pursuing the development of an undeveloped unconventional reservoir that he believes holds significant untapped potential. Drawing from his experience with challenging wells and formations previously regarded as unproducible, he is committed to applying his insights to this new venture.
