PORTLAND, OR, August 02, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Oprah is not the only one talking about work-life balance. It's on the minds of many women entrepreneurs who own their businesses these days. If you run your own business, Gold Dog Consulting founder, Cindy Hooker wants to know if your work has taken over much of your life.
"It's fairly typical," Hooker says. "when you own your business, you start to work early and don't quit until after 9 o'clock at night and go to bed with your smartphone on your nightstand, checking emails first thing in the morning."
"You've become a slave to your work." says Hooker.
It is important to identify and understand this compulsive behavior before your life is completely taken over by it. There's a fine line between hardworking entrepreneurs and unhealthy responses to work demands. So it's vital to diagnose which category you fall under. As a leader, she says, it's part of your responsibility to recognize over work not just yourself - but also in your employees to avoid burnout.
The good news is that it is possible to break out of this cycle and work to live rather than the other way around. To avoid or break the cycle of workaholism, Hooker offers this advice: Play as hard as you work, find some downtime between projects, read a book, exercise and turn off the electronics during certain hours. Cultivate a work environment that encourages fun and downtime throughout the day. One idea is to create a stress-free zone when you feel burnout creeping in. It doesn't have to be big; it could be a hallway outside a conference room. Put up an inflatable palm tree and a picture of the ocean—anything that brings calm thoughts to mind for yourself. Another tip is to allow yourself permission to leave work early for family events or self-care. The more balance you can create, the better results you'll get from yourself when it matters most.
